What corporation is the main modern-day antagonist in the Assassin's Creed series?

The story behind the answer

Abstergo Industries is the main modern-day antagonist corporation in the Assassin's Creed series.

Abstergo presents itself publicly as a multinational company with interests in pharmaceuticals, technology, entertainment, and other industries. Secretly, it is controlled by the modern Templar Order and works to locate Pieces of Eden and shape society according to Templar goals. Its name comes from the Latin verb abstergo, meaning “to wipe away” or “to cleanse.”

The corporation is central to the series because it operates the Animus technology. In the first game, Abstergo employee Warren Vidic supervises Desmond Miles's memory sessions, while Lucy Stillman assists him. Later games show different Abstergo divisions and employees, including entertainment operations that turn genetic memories into interactive products.

Abstergo is not the same as the Templar Order itself: the corporation is its modern institutional front. That distinction helps explain why the company appears in contemporary scenes even when the historical sequences take place centuries earlier.
