What company serves as the recurring modern-day corporation in Assassin's Creed?

The story behind the answer

Abstergo Industries is the recurring modern-day corporation in Assassin's Creed.

Within the series, Abstergo is presented as a powerful multinational organization secretly controlled by the modern Templar Order. It develops and uses the Animus, a machine that lets subjects experience genetic memories inherited from their ancestors.

The corporation provides the modern framework for many Assassin's Creed stories. Desmond Miles is initially held by Abstergo and forced to relive Altaïr's memories in the first game. Later protagonists encounter Abstergo through research facilities, entertainment products, and its subsidiary Abstergo Entertainment.

Abstergo is fictional and should not be confused with Ubisoft, the real company that publishes the games. The name also appears in several related works, including novels, comics, and film material, where the organization continues to represent the Templar side of the long-running conflict.
