What company created the Animus in the Assassin's Creed universe?

The story behind the answer

Abstergo Industries created the Animus in the Assassin's Creed universe.

Abstergo is a modern multinational corporation secretly controlled by the Templar Order. Its Animus technology allows a subject to access genetic memories inherited from ancestors. The first game presents Desmond Miles as a captive test subject whose memories are explored by Abstergo scientist Warren Vidic.

The device provides the series' main narrative structure: historical gameplay is framed as a modern person experiencing an ancestor's life. Later Animus models become more portable and are used by both Abstergo and the Assassin Brotherhood. The technology also supports Abstergo's entertainment and research projects.

The word Animus refers to the machine, not the company that made it. Abstergo is also frequently confused with the Assassins' modern organization, which works against it. The fictional corporation first appears prominently in the 2007 game.
