The background behind the yellow arches in McDonald’s classic 1960s restaurant sign was red.
The strong red-and-yellow combination became one of McDonald’s most recognizable visual signatures. Yellow made the arches highly visible from the road, while red provided a bold contrasting field that helped the mark stand out on roadside signs, restaurant exteriors, packaging, and advertising.
The color pairing was not the same as the arches’ original architectural presentation. Early restaurants used yellow arches as part of a red-and-white building design, and the later connected-arches logo simplified those elements into a more portable identity. The familiar red background therefore belongs to the classic sign treatment rather than being the literal color of the arches.
McDonald’s has used many variations over time, including versions with a yellow logo on white, black, or transparent backgrounds. The red field remains the historically iconic combination most associated with the brand’s mid-century expansion.
