What color of disco suit did John Travolta originally want for "Saturday Night Fever"?

The story behind the answer

John Travolta originally wanted a black disco suit for “Saturday Night Fever.” The film’s famous white suit was chosen later for the climactic dance contest.

Travolta, playing Brooklyn disco dancer Tony Manero, initially preferred a darker look. Director John Badham and costume designer Patrizia von Brandenstein reconsidered it because a black suit would blend into the dimly lit disco. They also worried that Karen Lynn Gorney’s light-colored outfit would draw attention away from Travolta during their partnered dance.

The white three-piece suit became one of the most recognizable costumes in 1970s cinema. Its wide lapels, flared trousers and polyester styling captured the era’s disco fashion, while the film’s 1977 release helped turn Travolta into a major star and amplified the Bee Gees’ soundtrack worldwide.

A common mix-up is confusing Travolta’s original preference with the suit that actually appears on screen: black was the color he first wanted, but white became Tony Manero’s signature look. The surviving suit later attracted major fan interest, including a charity-auction purchase by film critic Gene Siskel.
