What color is the diagonal stripe on the flag of Trinidad and Tobago?

The story behind the answer

The diagonal stripe on the flag of Trinidad and Tobago is black.

The stripe runs diagonally from the upper hoist side toward the lower fly side. It is bordered, or “fimbriated,” by narrow white bands and crosses a red field, making black the stripe’s dominant color.

The flag was adopted on 31 August 1962, the day Trinidad and Tobago became independent from the United Kingdom. Artist Carlisle Chang designed it after the independence committee selected the national colors and layout.

The three colors carry national symbolism: red represents fire and the sun, black represents earth and dedication, and white represents water, purity, and equality. The white edges can cause confusion, especially when the flag is viewed at a distance, but they frame rather than replace the black diagonal band.
