What color is the cross on Denmark’s national flag?

The story behind the answer

The cross on Denmark’s national flag is white.

Known as the Dannebrog, Denmark’s flag is a red field bearing a white Scandinavian cross. The cross is shifted toward the hoist, with its vertical arm nearer the flagpole than the outer edge.

The Dannebrog is traditionally said to have fallen from the sky during the Battle of Valdemar in Estonia in 1219. Historians treat that story as a later legend, while the flag’s documented use is medieval and its present proportions were established over time.

Denmark’s design belongs to the Nordic cross family, which includes the flags of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. Its red-and-white appearance is therefore distinctive but part of a broader regional tradition.
