LMP2 sits below Hypercar in the current Le Mans class structure.
Hypercar is the premier category, combining Le Mans Hypercars and LMDh prototypes. LMP2 is the next prototype class, positioned beneath Hypercar and above the production-based LMGT3 category in the race’s overall class hierarchy.
LMP2 cars are more tightly controlled than Hypercars. Teams use approved chassis designs and a standard Gibson 4.2-litre V8 engine, with ORECA being the most common chassis supplier. These restrictions are intended to control costs and keep the category focused on close, accessible prototype racing.
A common mix-up is LMP1, which formerly occupied the top prototype position. Hypercar replaced LMP1 as the premier category when the new regulations debuted in 2021. Group C is older terminology associated with a 1980s sports-prototype era, while LMGT3 is the current GT class rather than the class immediately below Hypercar.
