McDonaldland was the children’s fantasy world McDonald’s introduced as part of its branding in 1971.
The fictional setting appeared in television commercials, restaurant promotions, packaging, and merchandise. It was populated by characters associated with McDonald’s products and brand ideas, including Ronald McDonald, Grimace, the Hamburglar, and Mayor McCheese.
McDonaldland gave McDonald’s a shared visual universe rather than a series of unrelated advertisements. Children could recognize recurring characters and settings across different campaigns. The concept also helped connect restaurant visits with play, imagination, and family entertainment.
McDonaldland is sometimes confused with Ronald McDonald himself. Ronald was one character within the larger world, not the name of the world. Some characters were later retired or used less frequently, but McDonaldland remains an important example of character-based fast-food branding.
