What character does Queen Latifah play on the show "Star"?

Queen Latifah plays Carlotta Renee Brown on the television series Star. Carlotta is an Atlanta beauty-salon owner who becomes a protective surrogate mother and later a manager for the show’s aspiring singers.

Star follows three young women—Star Davis, Simone Davis, and Alexandra Crane—as they try to establish themselves as a music group. Carlotta has a personal connection to the girls: she was close to their late mother and promised to look after them. Although she initially wants them to pursue a safer, church-centered life, she gradually supports their musical ambitions.

Carlotta is more than a supporting authority figure. Her past as a singer, her complicated relationship with Jahil Rivera, and her struggles with family and the music business drive several major storylines. The character also reflects the series’ Atlanta setting and its focus on music, loyalty, ambition, and reinvention. Star premiered on Fox in December 2016 and ran for three seasons.
