What character did Beyoncé play in the 2006 film Dreamgirls?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé played Deena Jones in the 2006 film Dreamgirls.

Dreamgirls, directed by Bill Condon, is a musical drama loosely inspired by the history of the Supremes and Motown. Deena Jones is a member of the fictional singing trio the Dreamettes, who later become the Dreams.

The film follows the trio's rise in the music business and the tensions created by ambition, commercial pressure, and changing ideas about stardom. Beyoncé performed several songs in the film, including “Listen,” which was written especially for the movie.

Jennifer Hudson played Effie White, the film's emotional central character, and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Beyoncé was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance and for “Listen,” but Deena Jones is not the same character as Effie White.
