Speedee was the character that appeared on McDonald’s packaging before Ronald McDonald became the company’s main mascot.
Speedee was a small chef character associated with the McDonald brothers’ Speedee Service System, introduced in 1948. The character represented quick preparation and service, which were central to the restaurant’s early identity.
The design was replaced in prominence by Ronald McDonald after the company developed a broader advertising world aimed especially at children. Speedee nevertheless remained an important link between the original restaurant system and the later national brand.
Speedee is sometimes confused with the Hamburglar because both belong to McDonald’s advertising history. They served different roles: Speedee promoted the restaurant’s fast-service idea, while the Hamburglar was a later fictional character in the McDonaldland campaign.
