What category does Pikachu have in the Pokémon games?

Pikachu has the category “Mouse Pokémon” in the Pokémon games.

Pikachu is an Electric-type species and the mascot of the Pokémon franchise. Its design combines a bright yellow body, red cheek pouches that produce electricity, pointed ears, and a lightning-bolt-shaped tail.

The Mouse Pokémon classification describes its species category, not its elemental type. Electric is Pikachu’s type, which affects battle strengths, weaknesses, and the moves it can use. This distinction is a common source of confusion because Pikachu’s electric powers are more immediately noticeable than its official category.

Pikachu first appeared in the original Pokémon video games and became globally recognizable through the anime, where it is Ash Ketchum’s partner. The species was designed by Atsuko Nishida at the request of lead designer Ken Sugimori, with Sugimori finalizing the artwork. Pichu, Pikachu’s pre-evolution, was added in Pokémon Gold and Silver.
