Which composer wrote the music for the original Pokémon games?

The story behind the answer

Junichi Masuda wrote the music for the original Pokémon games.

Masuda joined Game Freak and worked as a composer and programmer on Pocket Monsters Red and Green. His music helped establish the series' early sound, including battle themes, town music, and the memorable opening sequence heard by Game Boy players.

His role extended beyond composition. Masuda contributed programming to the early games and later became a director and producer on several Pokémon titles. He also composed music for later main-series games and contributed to Pokémon GO.

Satoshi Tajiri created the Pokémon concept, while Ken Sugimori was central to the visual design, so those two names are often associated with the franchise's beginnings. Masuda's contribution was different but equally foundational: he helped define the musical identity of Pokémon from its first games.
