What cancer center does the 'RP' in the HGP donor code RP11 refer to?

The story behind the answer

The “RP” in the HGP donor code RP11 refers to Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Roswell Park, located in Buffalo, New York, contributed volunteer blood samples and genomic resources to the Human Genome Project. Five volunteers donated blood for research; samples from individuals identified as RP5 and RP11 helped create the initial framework used in sequencing the reference genome. RP11 became especially important because DNA from that donor contributed a large share of the reference assembly.

The code is associated with a donor and a clone library, not with a gene, chromosome, or sequencing method. BAC clones—large bacterial artificial chromosome fragments—were made from donor DNA and mapped and sequenced as part of the hierarchical strategy used by the public HGP. The resulting reference genome is therefore a composite assembled from multiple sources, although RP11 contributed substantially.

The center’s name has changed over time, including Roswell Park Cancer Institute, but its current name is Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. That naming history can make older references appear different even though they point to the same Buffalo institution.
