What building in Amsterdam, along the Prinsengracht canal, contains the secret annex where Anne Frank hid?

The story behind the answer

The building in Amsterdam along the Prinsengracht canal containing the secret annex where Anne Frank hid is the Anne Frank House. The museum occupies Prinsengracht 263–267, with the original hiding place preserved behind the front house at number 263.

During the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, Otto Frank’s business operated in the building. On 6 July 1942, Anne Frank, her parents, her sister Margot, and four other Jewish people went into hiding in the concealed rear annex. They remained there for more than two years, relying on helpers in the office below for food, supplies, and news.

Anne wrote much of her diary while hidden there. The group was arrested in August 1944, and Otto Frank was the only one of the eight people in hiding to survive the concentration camps. He later arranged for Anne’s diary to be published in Dutch in 1947. The building opened as a museum in 1960, while the nearby Westerkerk is a separate church often used as a landmark for finding it.
