What breakfast-focused McDonald’s character was introduced in 1980?

The story behind the answer

Birdie the Early Bird was introduced by McDonald’s in 1980 as a breakfast-focused character. She helped the company promote its expanding breakfast menu and morning positioning.

Birdie joined the existing McDonaldland cast, which already included characters such as Ronald McDonald, Grimace, the Hamburglar, and Mayor McCheese. Unlike characters centered on hamburgers or milkshakes, Birdie was designed specifically around the morning daypart.

Her name directly reinforced the message: an “early bird” suggests getting up early and eating breakfast. This made her useful in advertising for breakfast products, including McDonald’s morning meals.

Birdie is sometimes mistaken for one of the original McDonaldland characters because she became familiar through later advertising. However, her introduction came in 1980, after the fictional world and several of its best-known figures were already established.
