What black color symbolism linked Anubis to rebirth and the Nile?
Answer
Fertile soil
Answer
Fertile soil
Anubis’s black color symbolized fertile soil, linking the god with the Nile’s renewing power and with rebirth. Ancient Egyptian artists commonly used black for Anubis’s body or head, although real desert jackals are not uniformly black.
The annual Nile flood deposited dark silt on the fields. Egyptians connected this rich soil with agricultural renewal, so black could signify life, regeneration, and fertility as well as death. The same color also evoked the darkened, transformed body of a mummy.
This symbolism explains why Anubis’s black appearance was not simply an attempt to portray a natural animal. Egyptian religious art often used color symbolically. Green, for example, could suggest vegetation and regeneration, while gold was associated with the imperishable nature of the gods.
