What birds protect the kingdom from the Tower of London?
Answer
Ravens
Answer
Ravens
The birds traditionally said to protect the kingdom from the Tower of London are ravens.
According to the Tower’s enduring legend, if the ravens ever leave the fortress, the Tower itself and the kingdom will fall. The story is often associated with King Charles II, who is said to have ordered that the birds be protected after hearing the warning. The legend may have been reinforced by the ravens’ long association with the Tower and its medieval atmosphere.
Today, the ravens are cared for by a Yeoman Warder known as the Ravenmaster. The Tower traditionally keeps at least six ravens, although the exact number can vary. Their wings are carefully managed so they remain safely within the grounds, and each bird has its own name and personality.
The ravens are not literal military defenders. “Protect the kingdom” refers to the prophecy and their symbolic role as guardians of the Tower. Their presence is one of the best-known traditions connected with this historic London fortress.
