A dove brought Noah an olive leaf in the Genesis Ark story.
After the floodwaters began to recede, Noah sent birds from the ark to test whether the ground had reappeared. Genesis 8 first describes a raven flying back and forth. Noah then sent a dove, which returned because it found nowhere to rest. A week later, the dove came back with a freshly plucked olive leaf, showing that vegetation was visible above the waters.
Noah sent the dove out once more after another seven days, and it did not return. The sequence signals that the land was becoming habitable again and that leaving the ark might soon be possible.
The olive branch later became a widely recognized symbol of peace, although Genesis uses it primarily as evidence that the flood was receding. The raven and dove are sometimes mixed up, but only the dove is said to return carrying an olive leaf.
