Cristóbal Balenciaga was born in the Basque town of Getaria, Spain.

Getaria lies in Gipuzkoa, on Spain’s northern coast in the Basque Country. Balenciaga was born there on 21 January 1895 and grew up in a modest family connected to the sea and to dressmaking. His father, José Balenciaga Basurto, was a mariner, while his mother, Martina Eizaguirre Embil, worked as a seamstress.

The young Balenciaga encountered tailoring through his mother and began working as an apprentice when he was about twelve. The Marchioness of Casa Torres, a local aristocrat and client of his mother, recognized his talent and became an important early patron. She helped direct him toward formal training in Madrid.

Getaria remains central to his legacy. The Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum opened there in 2011, preserving garments and materials associated with the designer. Bilbao and San Sebastián are also important Basque cities, but neither was his birthplace; Madrid was where he later received professional tailoring training.
