The detachable controllers supplied with the Nintendo Switch are called Joy-Con.
A standard Switch includes one left Joy-Con and one right Joy-Con. They slide onto the sides of the console in handheld mode, but can also be removed and used separately or attached to the included Joy-Con Grip for a more traditional arrangement.
The two controllers are not identical. The right Joy-Con includes an infrared motion camera and an NFC reader, while the left Joy-Con includes a dedicated capture button. Both contain motion sensors and advanced vibration hardware called HD Rumble.
Joy-Con is often confused with Nintendo’s separate Pro Controller. The Pro Controller is a larger, optional gamepad, whereas Joy-Con refers to the paired detachable controllers designed around the Switch’s portable and shared-play concept.
