What architectural feature inspired the name of McDonald's Golden Arches brand symbol?
Answer
The restaurant's arches
Answer
The restaurant's arches
McDonald's Golden Arches symbol was inspired by the arches built into its restaurant buildings.
Architect Stanley Clark Meston designed the early McDonald's restaurant buildings with large yellow arches on each side. The arches were visible from the road and helped the restaurants stand out in the automobile-centered landscape of mid-century America.
The two architectural arches were later combined into the familiar “M” symbol used in McDonald's corporate identity. The sign therefore began as a building feature before becoming a standalone graphic logo.
People sometimes assume the Golden Arches were originally drawn as a letter M. Historically, the architectural forms came first; their visual combination was subsequently interpreted as the initial of McDonald's. This transition helped turn roadside architecture into one of the world's most recognizable brand marks.
