What animals pull Freyja's chariot?

The story behind the answer

Cats pull Freyja’s chariot in Norse mythology.

The Prose Edda says that Freyja travels in a chariot driven by two cats. Their names are not given in the surviving medieval sources, so modern artwork often presents them simply as large, supernatural cats rather than as individually identified animals. The detail helps distinguish Freyja’s transport from the goat-drawn chariot associated with Thor.

Freyja is one of the Vanir and is connected with love, beauty, fertility, gold, war, and seiðr, a form of magic involving prophecy and influence. Her cat-drawn chariot appears in the Prose Edda’s Gylfaginning, including an account of her attending Baldr’s funeral.

Cats had important symbolic associations in later Scandinavian folklore, which may help explain why they became linked with Freyja, though the surviving mythological evidence is limited. Freyja also owns the boar Hildisvíni, a falcon-feather cloak, and the necklace Brísingamen. Do not confuse her chariot with her other animal associations: the boar accompanies her, but the cats are the animals that draw her vehicle.
