What animal is the title character in Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox?

The story behind the answer

The title character in Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox is a fox.

Mr Fox is a clever wild fox who steals food from three farmers: Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. When the farmers try to catch him, he and his family dig deeper underground and devise a plan to survive while obtaining food for the other burrowing animals.

Dahl published the novel in 1970. Its compact structure, animal characters, and comic conflict made it especially popular with younger readers, while its themes include ingenuity, family loyalty, and resistance to bullying authority.

The story was adapted into a stop-motion animated film directed by Wes Anderson in 2009. Although the film expands the setting and characterization, its central figure remains Mr Fox, the resourceful fox opposing the three farmers.
