What alien race is central to Lovecraft's 'The Shadow Out of Time'?

The story behind the answer

The alien race central to Lovecraft’s The Shadow Out of Time is the Great Race of Yith. These beings drive the story’s signature idea: exchanging minds across bodies, eras and worlds.

The narrator, Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee, loses control of his body from 1908 to 1913 while his consciousness is displaced into the body of a Yithian. The Yithians use this mental projection to gather knowledge from different periods of Earth’s history. Their vast library preserves information about civilizations, species and events across time.

Lovecraft wrote the novella from 1934 to 1935, and it first appeared in the June 1936 issue of Astounding Stories. The story combines cosmic horror with speculative ideas about memory, identity and time travel. Peaslee’s disturbing dreams and partial memories gradually become evidence of an actual encounter rather than a simple mental illness.

Readers often confuse the Yithians with other Lovecraftian beings. The Elder Things are central to At the Mountains of Madness, while Deep Ones belong especially to The Shadow over Innsmouth. Shoggoths also appear prominently in Lovecraft’s Antarctic fiction, but they are not the race responsible for Peaslee’s mind exchange.
