The alias Jerry uses to hide in the hotel at the end of Fargo is Anderson. After his criminal scheme begins collapsing, Jerry Lundegaard checks into a motel outside Bismarck, North Dakota, under the name Mr. Anderson.
The alias appears earlier in the film’s screenplay and hotel sequence, when Jerry registers for a room and tells the clerk he is staying for one night. By the time police arrive, he has become so panicked and disorganized that he momentarily seems not to recognize the name when an officer calls, “Mr. Anderson.” He then tries to escape through the bathroom window but is caught.
Jerry’s use of Anderson is easy to confuse with his real identity, Jerry Lundegaard, or with the names of the kidnappers, Carl Showalter and Gaear Grimsrud. The alias also highlights his character: he plans an elaborate disappearance but cannot maintain control of even the simplest details. Fargo was released in 1996 and follows Jerry’s attempt to profit from arranging his wife’s kidnapping.
