What aircraft inspired the name of Nike’s Air Force 1 sneaker?

The story behind the answer

Nike’s Air Force 1 sneaker was named after Air Force One, the aircraft used by the president of the United States.

Bruce Kilgore designed the shoe, which Nike introduced in 1982 as a basketball model. It was the first basketball shoe to use Nike Air cushioning, a technology that placed pressurized air in the sole to improve cushioning and impact protection.

The shoe was named after the presidential aircraft to suggest movement, power, and technological ambition. Its high-top version originally included an ankle strap, while later low-top and mid-top versions broadened its appeal.

The Air Force 1 became especially important in streetwear after its basketball role diminished. Nike temporarily discontinued the model in 1984, but demand from retailers and consumers helped bring it back. The shoe’s name refers to the aircraft, not to a military combat plane or a particular Air Force uniform.
