What Academy Award was "Star Wars: Episode III" nominated for?

The story behind the answer

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith was nominated for the Academy Award for Achievement in Makeup.

The nomination recognized the work of makeup artists Dave Elsey and Nikki Gooley at the 78th Academy Awards, honoring films released in 2005. The movie did not win; the award went to The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Makeup was especially important in Revenge of the Sith because the film transformed actors into aliens, battle-worn soldiers, older characters, and grotesquely injured figures. The practical work helped create General Grievous, Chancellor Palpatine’s deteriorating appearance, and Anakin Skywalker’s severe injuries after his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The category’s official name has since changed to Best Makeup and Hairstyling, but “Achievement in Makeup” is the historically correct wording associated with the 2006 ceremony. The film received only this Oscar nomination, despite being the concluding chapter of George Lucas’s Star Wars prequel trilogy and a major technical production.
