What academic field did C.S. Lewis teach at Cambridge University from 1954?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis taught Medieval and Renaissance literature at Cambridge University from 1954.

In 1954, Lewis became the first holder of the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Magdalene College, Cambridge. The appointment followed nearly three decades of teaching English literature at Magdalen College, Oxford.

His scholarly work covered medieval allegory, Renaissance poetry, literary history, and the literature of the Middle Ages. Studies such as The Allegory of Love helped establish his academic reputation well before his popular Christian writings and children’s fiction made him internationally famous.

The Cambridge post is often confused with Lewis’s Oxford fellowship because he remained strongly associated with Oxford in public memory. He continued living in Oxford while holding the Cambridge chair and traveled between the two universities. His Cambridge appointment lasted until his death in 1963.
