Liz’s wish to become a mother is a recurring part of her character arc. In the third-season premiere, “Do-Over,” she is trying to adopt a child, but the adoption agent questions whether Liz’s demanding job running the TGS sketch-comedy show leaves enough room for parenting. The storyline turns her longing for a family into both an emotional conflict and a source of the show’s absurd comedy.
The theme did not begin in season three. Earlier episodes, including the first-season episode “The Baby Show,” had already shown Liz thinking about marriage, motherhood, and alternative ways of having a child. The second-season finale also ends with Liz deciding to adopt after a pregnancy scare involving her ex-boyfriend Dennis.
Liz is played by Tina Fey, who created the series. Viewers sometimes confuse her desire for a child with storylines involving Jenna Maroney or Cerie Xerox, but the adoption plot belongs specifically to Liz.
