What 1960 advertising phrase invited customers to “look for” McDonald’s arches?

The story behind the answer

“Look for the Golden Arches” was McDonald’s 1960 advertising phrase.

The wording turned the arches into a navigational promise as well as a logo. Motorists could recognize the bright roadside structures from a distance and associate them with McDonald’s restaurants. This was especially useful as the chain expanded beyond its original Southern California base.

The phrase helped establish the arches as a central part of McDonald’s identity before later campaigns emphasized specific food products or emotional benefits. It also explains why the arches are often discussed as both architecture and advertising: they began on the buildings, then became a portable brand mark.

This slogan is easy to confuse with “You Deserve a Break Today,” a later McDonald’s campaign from the 1970s, or “I’m Lovin’ It,” introduced in the 2000s. Those campaigns used different wording and belonged to different stages of the company’s branding history.
