Under what pen name did C.S. Lewis publish poetry in the 1920s?
Answer
Clive Hamilton
Answer
Clive Hamilton
C.S. Lewis published poetry under the pen name Clive Hamilton in the 1920s.
Lewis used Clive Hamilton for two early poetry collections: Spirits in Bondage, published in 1919, and Dymer, published in 1926. The name combined his first name, Clive, with Hamilton, one of his middle names. These works appeared before he became famous for Narnia and his Christian apologetics.
Spirits in Bondage was published shortly after Lewis’s service in the First World War and reflects the darker mood associated with some of his early poetry. Dymer is a longer narrative poem with mythic and symbolic elements.
Lewis later published poetry under his own initials, including Poems in 1964. His early pseudonym is sometimes confused with N.W. Clerk, the name he used for A Grief Observed. That later pseudonym served a different purpose and appeared decades after Clive Hamilton.
