Under what pen name did C.S. Lewis publish A Grief Observed?
Answer
N.W. Clerk
Answer
N.W. Clerk
C.S. Lewis published A Grief Observed under the pen name N.W. Clerk.
A Grief Observed is a short book about Lewis’s grief after the death of his wife, Joy Davidman, in 1960. It was first published in 1961 under the pseudonym N.W. Clerk, partly because Lewis wanted readers to respond to the work without focusing on his public identity.
The book consists of reflections on mourning, prayer, anger, doubt, and love. Its intensely personal voice differs from the more systematic apologetic style of books such as Mere Christianity.
The pseudonym was later revealed, and subsequent editions appeared under Lewis’s name. The book is sometimes mistakenly treated as a conventional autobiography, but it is better understood as a private journal of grief shaped into a literary and spiritual meditation.
