Ugandan Knuckles became widespread through avatars in the virtual-reality game VRChat.
In late December 2017, players began filling VRChat with avatars depicting a distorted version of Knuckles the Echidna. The small, rounded character was created by DeviantArt user tidiestflyer and became associated with repeated phrases such as “Do you know da wae?” and “Save the queen!” Players often traveled in groups, imitated accents, and used the avatars to troll or harass other participants.
The meme’s background combined several online sources. Its character design was influenced by a 2017 YouTube review of Sonic Lost World by Gregzilla, while some of its catchphrases and Uganda references came through fans of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds streamer Forsen. The “da wae” material also drew on the 2010 Ugandan action-comedy film Who Killed Captain Alex?
The phenomenon was controversial because many performances relied on exaggerated African stereotypes. In January 2018, VRChat’s developers published an open letter about harassment and encouraged users to use the game’s muting tools. The meme is therefore tied specifically to VRChat’s social-avatar culture, not Roblox, Rec Room, or Second Life.
