Twiglets were invented in 1929 by which French biscuit maker at Peek Freans?

The story behind the answer

J. Rondalin invented Twiglets in 1929 while working at Peek Freans.

Rondalin was a French biscuit maker and technical manager at Peek Freans’ Bermondsey factory in London. The snack reportedly began when he added brewer’s yeast to leftover Vitawheat dough, producing an irregular, twig-like biscuit with a distinctive savory flavor.

Twiglets were not immediately sold to the public: Peek Freans launched them commercially in 1932. Their knobbly shape and brown, speckled appearance became defining features, while the yeast-based coating gave them a taste often compared with Marmite.

Twiglets were originally marketed as an upscale cocktail accompaniment and were traditionally sold in drum-shaped tins during the Christmas season. Later, the brand introduced variations such as Worcestershire sauce and curry flavors. Today, Twiglets are made by Jacob’s, part of United Biscuits. The other listed names are associated with different biscuits or confectionery history, not this invention.
