Ties made of which delicate fabric must be stored on tie racks?

The story behind the answer

Ties made of silk should be stored on tie racks.

Silk is a smooth, strong natural protein fiber produced by silkworms, most famously the larvae of the domesticated silkmoth. Its elegant sheen and soft drape made it a favored material for neckties, but silk can crease, snag, stain and lose its shape more easily than many sturdier fabrics.

A tie rack lets a silk tie hang freely instead of remaining folded or knotted. After wearing one, it should be untied completely and allowed to hang so wrinkles can relax. Leaving a knot in place can crush the tie’s interlining and create a stubborn or permanent crease. A loose roll in a tie organizer is another acceptable option when hanging space is unavailable.

The storage advice is especially important for silk because it is difficult to clean safely. Silk ties should generally be blotted rather than rubbed, kept away from direct sunlight and protected from excessive humidity. Knit ties are different: hanging can stretch them, so they are usually better folded or loosely rolled in a drawer.
