The winner of the Masters Tournament is awarded a green jacket.
The jacket is one of golf's most recognizable prizes and is associated with Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, where the Masters is played. The club's members traditionally wear the distinctive green sport coat on its grounds, and the tournament champion becomes an honorary member after winning.
The tradition was formalized in 1949, when Sam Snead became the first Masters champion to receive a jacket as part of the ceremony. Earlier champions were later given jackets retroactively. Since then, the previous year's champion has traditionally helps put the jacket on the new winner during the presentation.
A champion may keep the jacket for one year, after which it is returned to Augusta National for safekeeping. It remains the winner's personal property but generally stays at the club, except when the reigning champion is permitted to take it off the grounds. The Masters winner also receives a gold medal and has their name engraved on the tournament trophy.
