Answer
PGA Championship
Answer
PGA Championship
The Wanamaker Trophy is awarded to the winner of the PGA Championship. It is named for Rodman Wanamaker, the businessman and golf supporter who helped establish the PGA of America and supported the championship’s creation.
The first PGA Championship was held in 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York. Jim Barnes won that inaugural event, defeating Jock Hutchison in the final. The original trophy became the championship’s defining prize, while modern winners receive replicas to keep.
The trophy stands nearly 2.5 feet tall and weighs about 27 pounds. Its large size makes it one of golf’s most recognizable championship awards, and each champion’s name is engraved on it. The original trophy itself must be returned for future tournaments.
A famous episode in its history occurred when the trophy disappeared for several years after Walter Hagen misplaced it. It was found in 1930 in the cellar of L.A. Young and Company, a club manufacturer connected with Hagen’s equipment.
