The Taj Mahal is located in which country?

The story behind the answer

The Taj Mahal is located in India. The ivory-white marble mausoleum stands on the Yamuna River in Agra, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Mughal emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the monument in 1631 as the tomb of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died that year. The central mausoleum was completed in 1648, while the wider complex—including its gardens, mosque, guesthouse, and surrounding structures—was completed around 1653.

The Taj Mahal is more than a single domed building: it is a carefully symmetrical Mughal complex combining Persian, Islamic, Indian, and Central Asian design traditions. Shah Jahan was later buried there beside Mumtaz Mahal. A common mix-up is identifying it with a nearby country because Agra is close to South Asia's historical cultural crossroads, but the monument is firmly in India and is administered as a national monument.
