“Insecure” is based in part on a web series, Issa Rae’s “The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl.”
Rae created and starred in “Awkward Black Girl,” which premiered on YouTube in 2011. The comedy followed J, a young woman navigating uncomfortable workplace situations, friendships, dating, and her own inner monologue. Its direct, self-produced style helped Rae build an audience before she moved into television.
HBO’s “Insecure,” created by Rae and Larry Wilmore, expanded those ideas into a larger half-hour comedy-drama about Issa Dee and her best friend Molly in Los Angeles. The television series is not a scene-for-scene continuation: it introduces new characters, storylines, settings, and a more serialized structure while retaining the earlier web series’ focus on awkwardness, identity, relationships, and Black womanhood.
The most precise description is “partially based on a web series,” rather than simply “a web series adaptation.” Rae’s online work was the creative foundation, but “Insecure” became its own HBO series, running for five seasons from 2016 to 2021.
