The series “Futurama” takes place in the 31st century.
The story begins when deliveryman Philip J. Fry is accidentally frozen in a cryogenic chamber on December 31, 1999. He awakens 1,000 years later, bringing him into the year 3000 and the technologically advanced world of the 31st century.
Much of the series takes place in New New York, a future city built above the ruins of present-day New York. The old city survives below as a sewer and underground settlement, commonly called Old New York. This setting lets the show turn familiar modern institutions, social problems, and cultural habits into futuristic jokes.
The 31st-century setting also explains the show's mix of science fiction and satire. Robots, alien civilizations, space travel, cloning, cryonics, and advanced medicine appear alongside exaggerated versions of bureaucracy, advertising, politics, and celebrity culture. The answer is sometimes confused with the 30th century because Fry wakes up around the year 3000, but the year 3000 belongs to the 31st century.
