The Selection is set between which two seasons of The Good Place?

The story behind the answer

The Selection is set between the third and fourth seasons of The Good Place.

NBC released the six-part digital series on September 13, 2019, shortly before Season 4 premiered. It was designed as a story bridge: the Bad Place demons, led by Shawn, work out which humans should be sent to Michael’s newly created afterlife neighborhood.

The chronology is slightly more precise than the promotional description suggests. The webisodes take place during an ellipsis in Season 3, after the events surrounding “Chidi Sees the Time-Knife,” while preparing the situation that Season 4 continues. That is why references often describe the series as sitting between Seasons 3 and 4.

The phrase does not mean that The Selection is a fifth season or a conventional broadcast season. It is a separate six-episode digital companion series. Its placement also explains why watching it can provide extra context before beginning the fourth and final season, particularly about Shawn’s role and the selection of the four experimental subjects.
