The Road to Hana is on which Hawaiian island?

The story behind the answer

The Road to Hana is on the island of Maui.

Known officially as the Hāna Highway, the route uses Hawaii Routes 36 and 360 to connect Kahului with Hāna on Maui’s eastern coast. The drive passes through lush rainforest, waterfalls, sea cliffs, small communities, and numerous historic bridges, making it one of Hawaii’s signature scenic journeys.

The road is famous for being slow and winding rather than especially long in a straight-line sense. The highway is about 64.4 miles, includes more than 59 bridges, and has approximately 620 curves along Route 360. Many bridges are narrow, and 46 are only one lane wide, so travel times can reach about two and a half hours or more.

A common mix-up is confusing the Road to Hana with a route on Hawaii Island, the state’s largest island. Hana is a Maui destination. Modern construction began in the 1870s, and the full road officially opened on December 18, 1926; much of it was not paved until the 1960s.
