The original Gran Turismo was released for which console?

The story behind the answer

The original Gran Turismo was released for the PlayStation. Sony Computer Entertainment launched the game in Japan on December 23, 1997, and later released it in other regions for the same console.

The game was developed by Polys Entertainment, then an internal Sony development group that was later renamed Polyphony Digital. Its five-year development cycle focused on realistic car handling, licensed vehicles, and detailed racing environments—ambitious goals for the era. The result became one of the defining simulation racers of the 1990s.

Players sometimes confuse the original game with later entries because the series moved across several PlayStation generations. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec appeared on PlayStation 2, Gran Turismo 5 and 6 on PlayStation 3, and Gran Turismo 7 on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Those are sequels; the first Gran Turismo belongs specifically to the original PlayStation.
