The Islands of the Bahamas boast which capital city?

The story behind the answer

The Islands of the Bahamas boast Nassau as their capital city.

Nassau is located on New Providence, one of the country’s major islands, and is also the largest city in The Bahamas. It serves as the nation’s administrative, commercial, educational, and cultural centre. The city contains the House of Assembly and important government and judicial institutions.

The settlement was founded in 1670 as Charles Town and was rebuilt and renamed Nassau in 1695. The later name honours William III of England, who was also Prince of Orange-Nassau. During the early eighteenth century, Nassau became associated with pirates because of its sheltered harbour and strategic position in the Caribbean.

A frequent mix-up is Paradise Island, a well-known resort destination just across the harbour from Nassau. Paradise Island is not the capital; Nassau is on New Providence. The Bahamas is an archipelago of hundreds of islands and cays, but the country’s political and population centre remains concentrated around Nassau and nearby New Providence.
