The Hulu series Castle Rock takes place in Maine. Its setting is the fictional town of Castle Rock, part of the connected geography Stephen King created for many of his stories.
The series premiered in 2018 as an original psychological-horror drama inspired by King’s characters, places, and themes. It is not a direct adaptation of one particular King novel; instead, it builds new stories around familiar references such as Shawshank State Prison and characters connected to King’s fictional universe.
Castle Rock is one of King’s best-known imaginary Maine communities, alongside Derry and Jerusalem’s Lot. The town appears in or is associated with works including Cujo, The Dead Zone, The Dark Half, and Needful Things.
Viewers sometimes confuse the show’s setting with its filming location. Although the story is set in Maine, much of the series was filmed in Massachusetts, including the town of Orange and locations in Devens.
