The hip-hop duo made up of André 3000 and Big Boi is known as OutKast. The group is also commonly styled as Outkast, without a capital K.
André Benjamin, later known as André 3000, and Antwan Patton, known as Big Boi, formed the duo in Atlanta in 1992. They met as teenagers and became part of the city's Dungeon Family creative collective. Their name reflected both their distinct style and the sense that Southern rappers were often overlooked in the East Coast–West Coast hip-hop rivalry.
OutKast released its debut album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, in 1994. The duo became known for combining Southern hip-hop with funk, soul, psychedelia, jazz, and melodic songwriting. Their breakthrough continued with albums such as ATLiens, Aquemini, and Stankonia.
Their 2003 double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below contained one disc led by each member. It produced major hits including Big Boi's “The Way You Move” and André 3000's “Hey Ya!” OutKast is sometimes confused with other Southern groups, but Eightball & MJG, UGK, and Goodie Mob are separate acts.
