The Drake & Future hit song "Jumpman" is named after the logo inspired by which former NBA player?

The story behind the answer

Drake and Future's “Jumpman” is named after the logo inspired by former NBA player Michael Jordan.

The Jumpman is the silhouette used by Nike for its Air Jordan footwear and Jordan Brand products. The pose originated with a 1984 photograph of Jordan, taken before the Summer Olympics, in which he held a basketball while making a ballet-like leaping gesture. Nike designer Peter Moore later adapted the pose for Air Jordan marketing.

The logo first appeared on the Air Jordan III in 1988 and became the central emblem of Jordan Brand. Drake and Future's track uses the name as a symbol of athletic status, wealth, and competitive swagger. It appeared on their 2015 collaborative mixtape What a Time to Be Alive.

A common mix-up is to associate “Jumpman” with Mario, whose early video-game name was also Jumpman. In this song, though, the reference is specifically to Michael Jordan's Nike silhouette, not the Nintendo character.
