The commercial pre-packaged version of Chex Mix was introduced in 1985.
Chex Mix has two distinct origin dates. A homemade Chex Party Mix recipe appeared in a 1952 Life magazine advertisement, roughly three decades before the ready-made product reached stores. That recipe combined Chex cereals with ingredients such as nuts and seasonings, helping establish the snack’s basic identity.
Ralston Purina introduced the pre-packaged commercial versions in 1985 and registered the relevant trademarks. This distinction explains why 1952 is sometimes given as Chex Mix’s “introduction”: it marks the early party-mix recipe, not the packaged snack sold commercially.
The mix generally contains Chex cereal along with ingredients such as pretzels, rye chips, bagel chips, breadsticks, nuts, or crackers. General Mills acquired the Chex product line from Ralston Purina in 1996, and commercial Chex Mix now comes in numerous savory and sweet varieties.
